This morning will be free to look around and explore Westport, often described as the prettiest town in Ireland. The town centre was designed by James Wyatt in 1780, in the Georgian architectural style. Its layout follows the medieval principles of urban design introduced by the Normans in the 13th Century.
The design for the town was commissioned by the Lord Sligo of the nearby stately home, Westport House, as a place for his workers and tenants to live. It was also the home of the pirate chief Grace O’Malley in the mid-to-late 16th Century. For those wanting to, it is possible to visit Westport House which still is the stately home of the MarquIss of Sligo.
It was built by the Browne family in the 18th Century, on the site of an O’Malley castle which dungeons are still present today. The architects were Richard Cassels who built (1730) the east section of the house facing the town. It is a short walk from the hotel as is the quay area.
Monday 31st December 2018
Today we take a tour through the Connemara National Park, with some of Ireland’s most breath-taking scenery, often described as “Joyces Country” as writer and poet James Joyces’ family originate here. Later we drive on to Kylemore Abbey, set in a tranquil glen on the shores Kylemore Lough.
A visit is well worthwhile especially to the restored walled garden, one of the largest in the world. Kylemore is also the monastic home of the Benedictine order. Then on to nearby Cong the charming village on the shores of Lough Corrib known as the Quiet Man village after being used in the 1950s John Wayne movie.
We will have a free time in the afternoon prior to the gala dinner and party in the hotel
Tuesday 1st January 2019
We will take the road known as the Atlantic Drive and eventually cross a small bridge onto Achill Island. From here we then continue along the narrow coast road across Achill Island with breathtaking views all the way.
Achill is the largest island off the coast of Ireland, and is situated off the west coast. It has a population of 2,700. One of the most poignant places to visit on the island is the deserted village, some 80 dwellings in this village in the shadow of Slievemore mountain have been deserted since 1845 and the terrible famine that hit the region.
Wednesday 2nd January 2019
Today we must check out of the hotel after breakfast and make our way back to Dublin for the early afternoon ferry back to Holyhead. We should be back in Burscough at approximately 7pm
