Take time to wander around its many rooms, enjoy the refurbished Victorian Service Wing, try out the costumes in the Stable block or explore the beautiful gardens planned by ‘Capability’ Brown. There’s a lot to see and do and with two restaurants a chance to have a good lunch. From here we continue our drive to our hotel: Stoke By Nayland country club and Spa near Colchester.

This morning we firstly drive to The Beth Chatto Gardens. Beth Chatto OBE is an award-winning plantswoman. Her work here at the Gardens began in 1960. She took an overgrown wasteland of brambles, parched gravel and boggy ditches, transforming it using plants adapted by nature to thrive in different conditions. We then drive into Colchester. One of England’s oldest settlements. We advise you should visit Hollytree’s Museum which explains the history of the town and displays a wide range of memorabilia , Colchester Town Hall, a splendid example of 18th Century Baroque architecture.

Heading off at 9.30 we travel to Lavenham; England’s finest medieval village boasting some 320 listed buildings. Try part of the Heritage Walk to get a true feel of this wonderful village. After lunch possibly at the Swan we drive to Melford HalI NT. It’s fair to say that Melford Hall has had its share of trials and tribulations, but it’s thanks to many generations from medieval monks to the Hyde Parker family who still live here, that this home still stands.

This morning we drive East to the coast. Our first stop is at Thorpness the small village of Thorpeness is dominated by the Mere, which is popular all year round and bears witness to the village’s fantastical past. In 1910 Stuart Ogilvie bought the hamlet and set to transform it into a private fantasy holiday village. Later we continue along the coast to Southwold and will have some free time here over the lunch period. In the afternoon we call in at Adnams Brewery and Distillery where we will take a tour of the facility and of course sample the products!
Friday 4th May 2018.
After checking out of the hotel we head Ickworth’s impressive Rotunda NT- a magnificent showcase commissioned by the 4th Earl of Bristol to house his priceless treasures collected on tours around Europe in the 18th-century – is an architectural marvel. For 200 years, the eccentric, and sometimes infamous, Hervey family added to the treasures inside and out, also creating the earliest Italianate garden in England. From here we drive through Oakham and on to Melton Mowbray. Here we have our lunch break; it might be a ploughman’s lunch with the area’s own Stilton cheese accompanying a Melton Mowbray pork pie! We then head for home and allowing for an evening meal stop on the way.
